Speaking From Experience - Specifics/Ideas/What to Include
For PRIMARY RESEARCH I am going to create a questionnaire with questions along the lines of
- How things have been essential for you being here/turning up this year e.g. phone so people can make sure you wake up
- Whats the most practical piece of advice you could give to someone who parties too hard and doesn't work (bearing in mind they are having the time of their life)
- Whats the most practical piece of advice for someone who works too hard and doesn't know how to party (bearing in mind they are content with working this hard)
- how many times on average have you slipped up badly and partied too hard and hence didn't make it in/failed to complete the work
- Do you think you have made the most of the nightlife this year
- Out of 10 how successful do you feel you balance work VS play this year
- 5 sensible tips to make sure you can work and play hard e.g. do the work when you get it
- 5 idiotic ways to make sure you can work and play hard e.g. start drinking at lunch so you sober up earlier and get in for the next day
- How many nights a week do you drink/go out
- How have you kept the balance
- 5 words that sum up work vs play e.g impossible
PRESENTATION
- simliar to a loo book - small, short, simple with 1 liners or just words and simple hand/computer rendered
- include pointless facts, figures, anecdotes, pictures, icons
- similar to the recent issue of creative review (ANNUAL) where half the book is one way up and the other side (half play half work) is the opposite way up - easily divided
- 2 different colour schemes/typefaces or could be negative......colour with white righting, then white with colour writing
- small in size - 'the little book of...'
- name 'an idiots guide to surviving a social life on a graphics course.'
- Tone of voice = aimed at students so light, slang, swearing, basic directions/maps?
CONTENT
- TIPS - how to make things more bearable e.g. bring in pillows for the chairs. Washing money - any spare change hide away in a little pot. Make friends - they will make sure you get up...supposedly. Gum for alcohol breath
- WORDS - have a list but look them up on theasaurus so they make you think a little bit outside the box e.g. shower = decomtamination
- WHAT TO INCLUDE/MIX OF (idiotic ways of doing them)
- How to balance
- how to motivate
- how to get into uni after a night out - invent a machine!?
- make sure you go out
- get sleep - however difficult it may be e.g. have naps to keep going
- make sure you know your week e.g. draw timetable on your wall - repaint every week!

Speaking From Experience - Concepts
Pick 5 different concepts
Pick 2 rationales which you move forward with/develop
3 BOARDS - concept, content, method of deliver
MAKE IT APPROPRIATE TO GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDENTS
5 CONCEPTS
- money management/shopping
- making mistakes
- being realistic - balance between work & play
- How to get to know/explore
- Thinking outside the box (in graphic design)
CONTENT/METHOD OF DELIVERY
- Interactive mapping - could be a phone app and similar to the Facebook where you can pin point where you are on a map online then fill in details about it and what kind of place it is e.g. clubs/bars and how to get to them
- interactive/competative and realisitc diary planner which is done online/phone app and you can see what other people do and how they plan their life - use them as example/inspriation.
- Tip book - 'the idiots guide to a balanced life at uni - how to play and work hard' - amusing and useful tips along with illustrations - computer/hand wrendered
- a visual guide around leeds - given in the starter pack or viewed online
- pointers - info back - mind maps and brain tricks and visual stimulus to get people to think outside the box
- curb ur shopping booklet
CONCEPT I AM GOING WITH -
BALANCE - WORK VS. PLAY
The idiots guide to a balanced life at uni - Tip book on how to work harder than you play.
Speaking From Experience - Brainstorming
NEW EXPERIENCES
DIFFICULTIES I HAVE OVERCOME
LIFE EXPERIENCES
MEDIA - INTERESTED IN USING
SUBJECTS AREAS I AM INTERESTED IN
- graphic design
- attempting to manage time
- learning to try and manage money/student loan
- to be on time
- meeting new people
- learning to prioritise
- talking - be more open and to communicate with everyone!
- how to research efficiently
- balancing between work and play
- learning about software/programs
- learning to be independent
- new city - new nightlife
DIFFICULTIES I HAVE OVERCOME
- Not waiting until the last minute to do work
- being late - getting up with the alarm goes off rather than putting it on snooze!
- managing time and the amount of work i should be producing in a certain time period
- BLOGGING - keeping it up
- exhaustion - getting used to the intensity of the course, combined with less sleep and going out
- money/shopping - learning to curb it
- drinking too much
- software - learning new skills
- the roads - used to be terrified of crossing/cars - now calmer!
- cooking - could cook before but its more to do with the effort of having something different and healthy every night
LIFE EXPERIENCES
- curbing spending - temptation of shopping right on doorstep
- document/write about everything you think of as you go along so it is easier to keep track of ideas and how you get to final outcome
- washing up
- dont leave things to the last minute
- how to use mac

SUBJECTS AREAS I AM INTERESTED IN
- MONEY MANAGEMENT - being a girl in leeds with lots of shopping opportunities on the door step. learning how to resist the urge to spend all the student loan on clothes, shoes and unnecessary items just because you see your bank balance!
- MAKING MISTAKES - you learn from your mistakes rather than your successes, making mistakes opens you up to more opportunities and may take you down a new/alternate/interesting route. You become more daring, not afraid to try something new in fear of getting it wrong
- BALANCING - how to balance work and social life. Too much work = no life now, Too much play = no work later. Its finding a balance which is hard, you cant work all the time and you have to enjoy/make the most of everything -BEING REALISTIC

- HOW TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
- HOW TO GET THE BEST FROM THE COURSE
