WHAT IF

The Brief

  • What if a group of graphic design students get together, and decide to solve a problem?

  • Based on your common interests, research and knowledge, you must establish a “problem” that affects some sector of the general public in Leeds.

  • You must develop logical, original and adventurous research lines of enquiry in order to justify the relevance of the “problem “ which should inform a range of solutions.

  • The solution(s) must be resolved, designed and presented in the public domain and recorded appropriately.

Our Project Developments

we changed the direction of the brief after the crit as we found that we were trying to create a problem from a subject rather than working with a current issue.
The new direction we took was the rise in student tuition fees which was a very current issue and there were planned protests happening at the time as the bill was due to be passed later in the week.
Due to this brief being live we had to act quickly to get our work in the public eye.

We brainstormed methods/ideas that we could use such as;
  • posters,
  • flyers
  • internet/blog
  • protest packs
  • banners
  • protest posts
  • facts/figures on tuition fees and how the passing of the law will effect the students, debt, economy and university.
OUR DIRECTION

We planned to join the protest which was going on through Leeds that week. For this we designed a series of posters with information/slogans on. Using the information we had researched;
  • primary - we found a website where we could calculate the estimated time it would take a student to pay off their loan depending on what job they got into after leaving university, their average income level and the size of their loan. We could then compare this data (before the law and after the law)
  • secondary - researching the effects it will have on student after the law was passed. Finding out how much current MP's paid for their tuition fees. We found a series of discussion pages showing peoples opinions about the rise in tuition fees.

Posters
All the posters were double sided. On one side we printed a picture of David Cameron or Nick Clegg. The other side we came up with a series of slogans/pieces of information'
  • 'uni will be gash if we have no cash'
  • 'education is a right'
  • 'cant afford bread as cameron kneads the dough'
  • 'David Cameron only paid £1545.50 per year for his tuition'
  • 'Its YOUR education so why should you pay for it'
  • 'Budget cuts amount to NATIONAL self harm'

BOOKLETS
We designed an information booklet which we handed out while we were protesting.

GETTING IT OUT THERE

The day after we participated in the protest - we found evidence of our work on several media sources - newspapers and internet
